Good used condition

Gallipoli 1915 brings together a range of rarely-seen historic photographs, artworks and other images from the Australian War Memorial, the National Archives of Australia, the National Library and the State Library of New South Wales, as well as private collections, to provide a new insight into the Anzac story. These pictures bring home the enormity of the task faced by the Anzac, the rugged terrain and inhospitable conditions in which they fought, the challenges which beset each and every one of them. They highlight the spirit and humour that came to characterise the ‘Aussie Digger’ for later generations, but which, to the Anzacs themselves, was the reality of daily life in the midst of death. This book brings to life the stories of men such as Captain Leslie Hore, of the 8th Light Horse Regiment, who during five months on Gallipoli produced and sent home 44 small drawings showing his impressions of the Anzac campaign. In images that have rarely been seen outside the State Library of New South Wales, which bought the drawings after the war, Captain Hore’s work highlights the vivid contrast between the rugged beauty of the peninsula and the tragedy of war. His drawings range from domestic scenes of the Anzacs living a day to day life with poignant images of death and destruction in the trenches. Such pictures will give the reader a new appreciation of what it must have been like to have been an Anzac.
